Akimiski Island Reserve is abundant with wildlife; the plenty of fauna is a must-see attraction. Some exotic creatures that are expected to be seen are polar bears, arctic foxes, and belugas.
As well, the island is inhabited by numerous species of waterfowl and shorebirds. Commonly seen ones include: Canada Goose, Atlantic Brant, Snow Goose, Sandpiper, and Yellowlegs. Unfortunately, the climate of the island makes it a prime zone for pesky insects, such as flies and mosquitos. The island is also a bird sanctuary. Due to the natural shape of the bay, many migratory birds will stop by the island for a break. They will then continue to their destinations.
