Akimiski Island Reserve is found in the Hudson Plains ecozone. This ecozone includes many marshes and wetlands due to poor drainage of the area and has some of the world largest. Hudson's Bay acts as a moderator the temperature in the area, average summer temperatures are 11ºC, but in winter the average temperature is -18ºC. Precipitation ranges from 400mm in the northwest to 800mm in the southeast.
Vegetation changes from the north to the south as well. In the north of the ecozone, there is tree-less tundra, while in the south there are more trees.
This ecozone also is one of the largest producers of biting insects, which are an important source of food for many animals.
